first printing of the first detective story. This was Poe's first original contribution to Graham's, appearing in the April 1841 issue (pages 166-179). The first volume of Graham's Magazine (the volume-numbering took into account the 10 previous volumes of The Casket and 7 of the Gentleman's Magazine). Also contains the first printings of A Descent into the Malestrom, Island of the Fay, A Few Words on Secret Writing, and several others including two poems. Heartman and Canny, p. 203.
